Dean Jones gives honest verdict on Anthony Martial as United looks to carve out weakness

According to writer Dean Jones, Manchester United should try to sell striker Anthony Martial this summer.

The 27-year-old has underperformed this year, and Jones believes that the two are no longer a team worth keeping together. A move away from Old Trafford may be the wisest course of action for both sides.

According to Transfermarkt, Martial has not performed well this season under new boss Erik ten Hag, netting just six goals in 21 Premier League games.

The forward's inability to consistently put his enormous talent to use throughout his time with the Red Devils has long been a problem. Last season's loan stint at Sevilla brought the problem to light even more, and after the Frenchman failed in Spain, some Sevilla supporters began to hoot him during games.

Following Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League earlier this season, former Premier League great and midfielder Paul Scholes commented on the issue, saying : Anthony Martial's a talented lad but I think when the going gets tough when he's really got to dig in, he doesn't quite have the heart for it,".

That was a serious critical assessment from the former Manchester United's mid field maestro.

Despite the forward's undeniable quality, Jones thinks his time at Manchester United is up and the team should try to move him in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said: "It feels like it's time for Anthony Martial to move on. That's probably easier said than done. Because how do you actually offload him? What's his value? They've already tried the loan spell. Didn't really work for anyone in the end."

"I think this partnership between the two is past its sell-by date. But yeah, they've got to find a solution that works."

Lacking a reliable goal scorer at position nine has been a weakness for the United team this season. While Martial is a part of the problem and cannot be the sole solution, Wout Weghorst was unable to resolve it.

According to Spotrac, Martial now makes £250,000 a week at Old Trafford. If the Red Devils are able to offload the Frenchman in the summer and raise some cash in the process, that money might be used to sign a top-tier striker.

One possibility in that regard is Harry Kane, who the club have named as their top target during the summer transfer season, according to a recent SkySports article.

Nevertheless, regardless of whether Kane makes that decision or not, it appears that Martial may leave Old Trafford this summer after failing to make an impact in English football despite the promise he previously had.
