During the transfer period, Luton has been connected to yet another goalkeeper, with rumors the Hatters are keen on acquiring Tom Heaton from Manchester United.
The 37-year-old began his career with the Red Devils in 2005, went on to have many loan stints during his formative years at Old Trafford, and then made a permanent move to Cardiff City in 2010.
After spending two years in Wales, he spent a season playing for Bristol City before moving to Burnley in 2013, where he had a significant impact and amassed 200 appearances. He also received his three England caps while playing at Turf Moor.
Heaton left Manchester United for £8 million in 2019, played in 20 games for Aston Villa, returned to the club in 2021, and has since made three cup appearances, despite not playing in a single first team match last season.
Despite this, Heaton had a year added to his contract by manager Erik ten Hag, who is still in talks with United's first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea after former Stoke goalie Jack Butland went to Scottish Premier League team Rangers when his loan with United expired.
According to The Athletic, the Hatters and Hull City of the Championship have both expressed interest in a player who wants to play first team football next season.
Prior to their inaugural Premier League season, Luton will undoubtedly be on the market for a goalkeeper after allowing Harry Isted to go last month. As a result, they now have James Shea, Jack Walton, and Matt Macey on their payroll.
Ethan Horvath, who played 51 times for Nottingham Forest as they gained promotion through the play-offs, has not yet been re-signed by Town, although they have been linked to moves for Asmir Begovic, a former Everton and Chelsea goalkeeper, and Bournemouth's Mark Travers.
David De Gea's twisted saga
One of Manchester United's longest-tenured stars' contract negotiations have received a significant update, according to a report that the player is planning to depart Old Trafford.
Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, Fred, and Luke Shaw all had one-year contract extensions initiated by Manchester United in December. Since then, they have committed Shaw and Dalot to long-term contracts that expire in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
The Red Devils and Rashford's entourage are still negotiating a lucrative new contract for the left winger. Despite the fact that Rashford is content and would prefer to remain at Old Trafford, Paris Saint-Germain is a great fan of him.
Goalkeeper David de Gea's potential new contract at Manchester United has also generated a lot of discussion since his current contract is set to expire at the end of June.
The Telegraph reported on May 9 that De Gea was 'on the verge' of agreeing to a new contract. Erik ten Hag no longer wants any of his players to make more than £300,000 per week, thus his pay would have been decreased from £375,000 per week.
A substantial offer to join the Saudi top division has since been made to De Gea, who looks to have declined it.
At Man Utd, there is a genuine worry that the Spaniard would leave for free this summer. De Gea is not on the club's retained list because "discussions remain open" between the two parties, according to the announcement of the retained list.
The Daily Mirror seriously questioned whether an agreement would result from such negotiations. According to them, De Gea 'is ready to leave' Man Utd because he is dissatisfied with the request to dramatically lower his pay.
The Mirror notes that according to Man Utd's statement, U21s player-coach Tom Hiddlestone is "expected to stay" following contract discussions. However, the club did not use this language when referring to De Gea, indicating they are much less certain they will keep him on their books.
Losing someone with De Gea's expertise would undoubtedly be a significant setback for Manchester United. Having been signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 and making more than 500 appearances for the team across all competitions, he is also well familiar with the club.
Ten Hag could even be a little happy that De Gea is moving despite this. The 32-year-old's blunders from the previous season irritated the management, De Gea cannot play out from the back the way he wants, he also believes.
Man Utd may intensify their chase of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa now that De Gea is ready to move on. Due to his outstanding performances for Porto and the Portugal national team over the past few months, the shot-stopper has been linked with a move to Manchester United.
The best Portuguese teams are aware of the potential value of their elite players, therefore Costa won't be cheap. According to the most recent reports, Costa is worth £65 million.
David Raya of Brentford had previously been linked to Manchester United as a prospective suitor. But he's on the verge of joining Tottenham.
