David Raya's £40 million summer transfer is agreed upon by Manchester United and Tottenham, despite neither club considering the Brentford goalkeeper to be worth that much.
Raya has one year left on a contract that he is refusing to extend, thus it is anticipated that he will leave Brentford.
While Brentford replaced him with Mark Flekken from Bundesliga team Freiburg for £11 million, the Spaniard has surfaced as a target for a number of clubs looking for a new long-term goalkeeper, including Chelsea and West Ham.
Man Utd and Spurs, who may also add a new goalkeeper this summer, believe Raya's price is too high.
Even though Brentford manager Thomas Frank has previously stated that Raya would be worth £70m if his contract terms were longer, Sky Sports claims that both parties are'reluctant' to pay £40m.
"How much did Kepa cost?" In February, the Dane remarked, "He is at least as excellent as him."
Despite officially supporting David de Gea, Manchester United may think about upgrading in the future after a challenging campaign that ended with the Premier League Golden Glove.
De Gea maintained 17 clean sheets, which is at least three more than any other player, but he also made some notable errors and came under harsh criticism, notably from a number of analysts.
“They do need to get rid of him either now or if they’ve not got the money then obviously a year later is the maximum,” Gary Neville said recently.
“I don’t know how much money is there, so they might not be able to replace De Gea and, say, buy Harry Kane – if they were looking to do that – in one hit.”
Roy Keane, who has been one of De Gea's loudest critics, believes De Gea "makes too many mistakes" and that, with him as their starting goalkeeper, Manchester United "won't close the gap" to Manchester City.
After captain Hugo Lloris announced his intention to leave this summer, Spurs may feel under additional pressure to find a replacement No. 1.
“We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible,” he told French media earlier this month, although the Frenchman admitted the year remaining on his contract means Spurs can make the final call.
In any case, Raya is judged too pricey at £40m even though the Spain international offers extensive Premier League experience and ball-playing talent at just 27. Despite the fact that both Man Utd and Spurs will need to develop succession plans in their goalkeeping departments shortly, if not immediately, Raya is still too expensive.
Gavin Bazunu, who was statistically the poorest goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, is unquestionably Spurs' preferred choice. In the meantime, Man Utd has been associated with Porto's Diogo Costa.
